Good morning everyone. It’s both an honour and a pleasure to be with you today in Beijing for the World Internet of Things Convention 2025.
This year we celebrate two remarkable milestones: the 10th anniversary of the World Internet of Things Convention and the 20th anniversary of the introduction of Internet of Things at the World Summit on the Information Society in Tunisia.
In reaching these markers it’s worth pausing to reflect how far we’ve come – from a concept that once seemed futuristic to a reality that now shapes every aspect of our lives.
The modern world is increasingly reliant on digital technologies. According to the World Bank, the digital economy represents about 15 percent of global GDP, and one of its key drivers is the Internet of Things. There are now almost 19 billion connected devices worldwide.
Today, I want to emphasize the foundational role of International Standards in this digital revolution.
Data-driven technology is transforming industries, economies and societies by improving efficiency, accuracy and value across sectors. Consensus-based International Standards on AI, quantum and bio-digital convergence help ensure these emerging technologies are developed safely, responsibly and inclusively. They boost innovation and build trust among users.
ISO and IEC’s joint technical committee on the Internet of Things supports the technology’s responsible development and deployment through standards that promote device interoperability and data security, protecting user privacy. This work allows technology to seamlessly integrate into our daily lives – enhancing connectivity and building a more equitable and sustainable world. From smart cities and cloud computing to agrifood and digital healthcare, International Standards are silently connecting people and transforming society.
The Internet of Things committee’s liaison with the ISO/IEC joint technical committee on artificial intelligence ensures that AI considerations are embedded in Internet of Things standards. This is laying the groundwork for an all-electric and connected society in which AI and Internet of Things technologies interact effortlessly.
But with greater connectivity come greater risks. Safeguarding information assets and managing data security risks are vital for organizations. ISO and IEC’s joint standards on cybersecurity management provide comprehensive guidelines for organizations on protecting their security in the digital age.
These efforts will achieve little if we act alone. At ISO, we believe that deeper partnerships and stronger coordination are essential to achieving global connectivity and bridging the digital divide.
Our cooperation with standards development organizations, including IEC, ITU and the IFRS Foundation, enables harmonization across the standards ecosystem. This alignment is crucial for interoperability, security and sustainability.
The digital economy cannot be about growth at the expense of all else – it must be environmentally sustainable and inclusive. It should actively support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals so that everyone can fully enjoy the benefits of the digital revolution.
With this vision in mind, ISO was one of the initiators of the Standards Pavilion at COP30, which brought together international organizations, UN agencies and private-sector coalitions to champion credible, transparent and interoperable solutions for a sustainable future.
As a trusted platform for cooperation between governments, industry, academia and civil society, ISO welcomes the opportunity to strengthen our collaboration with the World Internet of Things Convention and all actors in the field of digital technologies.
I invite experts worldwide to engage with your national standards body and contribute to shaping the future of the digital economy through standards development.
As we move forward, the Internet of Things and digital technologies will continue to reshape our economies and societies. With International Standards as the foundation, we can ensure this transformation is safe, inclusive and sustainable. Together, through cooperation and innovation, we can unlock the full potential of a truly interconnected world and help create a better future for all.
Thank you.
